Cocoa Mulch Dangerous to Pets

CocoaMulch

Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don’t have a pet, please pass this to those who do.

Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn’t acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk . Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company’s website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey’s, and they claim that ‘It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won’t eat it.’

The Health Pet site gives the following information: Click here

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman’s Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called ‘ Theobromine’. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker’s chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

Beloved Country Place Bus Driver Passed Away

BonnieMaeSchwaderThe Country Place Bus Driver, Bonnie Mae Schwader . . . affectionately known as Miss Bonnie to most of us . . . passed away last weekend.  Her funeral services were on Saturday and Bus 081 was even there!  I’ve made a donation to the Bonnie Schwader Fund at American State Bank from all the Country Place kids.  Now, I’m not asking for $$ to cover the costs, just thought it would be nice to know for the kids and families who still ride the bus.

[Rebecca, you’re the best! We also got a nice note from Mary Watts, the new bus driver, with her contact info:

Mary Blair Watts, cell 903.312.0095 wattsm702@wmconnect.com

Miss Bonnie was greatly appreciated by our family because she kept an eye out for iPod’s, cell phones and books that our boy Lucas was prone to leaving on the bus. She’d always hold his stuff and give it to him when he got aboard again.]

Vandalism on Lakeshore
Received the following email yesterday from Terri McLarey:
This afternoon 11/7 at approximately 4:00 pm our mailbox was hit with what looks like to be a hammer or bat.  A large hole  was knocked into the side of the brick.  If anyone has any information on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Adopt-A-Cat
This from Kelly Smith:
I have a wonderful three year old black kitty that needs a new home.  She is short haired and very loving but isn’t getting along well with her sister kitty.  She is declawed (front),  fixed, litter trained and loves dogs but needs to be the only kitty in the house.  She is now living on the back porch with my dog and she needs a good home before winter.

She is my personal favorite but the sister kitty is my daughters..  Shady is smart, loves to be on your lap or chest for a nap and if your on the computer too long she will get your attention.  Shady is a great cat and deserves a better home life than the back porch and very friendly.  I don’t want to take her to the Humane Society, I would much rather have her close by so my son can visit occasionally, if that is permitted.  We haven’t had any more problems since we separated the kitty’s, so I know it is a territorial thing that we can’t live with.  If you happen to know of anyone wanting a grown kitty I would consider that as well.  Thanks for your time and hope to hear from someone soon.  I will even let someone test drive for a few days, she will win your heart.
