Deer Rescue Attempt

Last evening about 7pm I received a call from Melissa Strickland. She and Gary bought the Johnston home at 19274 Jo-Bar and have been busy updating, adding a pool and workshop, and enjoying life in Country Place. Their home backs up to one of the small, private lakes here and when Gary had gone down to feed the fish, he’d spotted a big doe mired in the mud over on the opposite bank along the Patterson’s shoreline. He brought his little boat down and he and Melissa had gone out to attempt a rescue. They managed to get the deer in the boat and Gary paddled her back to his side. I helped him get the exhausted deer up on the bank. She had obviously been struggling for hours and was pretty far gone…she couldn’t raise her head.

One of the pleasures of living in Country Place is sharing it with the wild creatures, so I was saddened to learn that when they’d gone back later to check on her she had expired. Still, I was proud of my neighbors for making the effort to save this lovely animal. We are hoping that the two fawns she travels with are old enough to make it on their own.
