Kids & Country Place

2015-11-05_Flanagans_01aI made a trip to Hidden Lake last Thursday; I’d caught a few bream and enjoyed some quiet time. I had already taken down my fly rod and was shooting pictures when I heard the sound of kids laughing and a moment later Kate & Carolyn Flanagan, along with a friend, came running over the dam with mom Kelly close behind. In short order the girls set up a picnic on the pier complete with tea and popcorn. I snapped a few photos and, as it began to get dark, we left. I was reminded of the reason Andrea and I had made the move to Country Place in 2007…this is just a wonderful place to raise kids. Our boys and I spent many hours fishing these lakes and I love seeing families enjoy our lakes and common areas.2015-11-05_Flanagans_022015-11-05_Flanagans_04a2015-11-05_Flanagans_03a

Deer Rescue Attempt

2015-09-30_DeerRsc_001
Last evening about 7pm I received a call from Melissa Strickland. She and Gary bought the Johnston home at 19274 Jo-Bar and have been busy updating, adding a pool and workshop, and enjoying life in Country Place. Their home backs up to one of the small, private lakes here and when Gary had gone down to feed the fish, he’d spotted a big doe mired in the mud over on the opposite bank along the Patterson’s shoreline. He brought his little boat down and he and Melissa had gone out to attempt a rescue. They managed to get the deer in the boat and Gary paddled her back to his side. I helped him get the exhausted deer up on the bank. She had obviously been struggling for hours and was pretty far gone…she couldn’t raise her head.

One of the pleasures of living in Country Place is sharing it with the wild creatures, so I was saddened to learn that when they’d gone back later to check on her she had expired. Still, I was proud of my neighbors for making the effort to save this lovely animal. We are hoping that the two fawns she travels with are old enough to make it on their own.

Perfect Weather for Spring Picnic

The cool and wet East Texas spring we’d been experiencing abated earlier this week to (partially) dry out Three Lakes Park and the day of the picnic couldn’t have been more glorious…clear and cool.

Thanks to Rachel McGee and Sarah Devendorf for their work in putting together this year’s Easter egg hunt and picnic. Thanks to Ricky Koss for mowing the huge Rosebrook front lawn; the kids had a ball running all over it finding eggs. Jake Boring found the egg with the gold key and won the stuffed Easter bunny…which he offered to share with big sister Kannon. Lee Kodet was joined at the grill this year by his daughter, Sammy, and David Schaub’s friend from Air Force days, JJ…the burgers, franks and sausages were all delicious. As were so many of the dishes prepared and brought by those who attended (several ladies cornered Lynette Fletcher for her dessert recipe). Mom, Andrea and I enjoyed meeting visiting with out-going board president Travis Hunt as well as the Duke’s, the Gallaway’s, Earl Drott and others.

Our two scheduled events, the Easter Egg Hunt/Spring Picnic and Fall Festival/Hayride, are such a wonderful way to get to know your neighbors. If you didn’t get to join us yesterday, please make it a point to attend in the fall.

Neighborhood Vitality

One of the clearest signs of a healthy neighborhood are updates and maintenance, so it’s good to see painters, chimney sweeps, yard crews, and masons working in Country Place.  Today, for instance, Enviro-Care is working on a new retaining wall for Jim and Dolly Walker at 19551 Lakeshore. Across the street at Ron & Debbie Rogers’ home, Flamingo Pools is busy clearing trees in preparation for building a new swimming pool. And at 19186 Big Timber, construction workers at Al & Kelly Flanagan’s are busy adding square footage in anticipation of their 4th child.
